Use of Duress Codes
Duress codes on devices such as mobile phones - emergency passwords or pin numbers - which a lone worker can invoke when physically threatened - are one way of ensuring a speedy response to an emergency.
With the technologies now available, it is possible for the employer to monitor the safety of staff during their working hours, and to provide them with the means to activate a duress code to call for assistance from the police or other emergency services.
Some devices on the market operate automatically if specific signals are not received; others can be operated manually. Radio pagers, mobile phones, and automatic alert devices are some of the means by which an emergency signal can be transmitted.
